It’s been a sunny month here in Wuerzburg, and with the exception of a heavy snowfall in the first week signs of spring are popping up in the form of fresh green shoots and snowbells. Contributing to these new colours around town have been the bright posters advertising the new Spielraum exhibition at the Kulturspeicher art museum that runs through to the 22nd April this year.
Kulturspeicher has been on my to-do list since I arrived last summer, so I decided to take the opportunity to check out the new exhibition and the rest of the gallery at the same time.
Not far from the train station and Babelfish, the original building was a granary at the Old Port of Wuerzburg along the Main River. For this alone the site is worth a visit, and from the top floor you can glimpse the boats moored on the opposite bank. Inside the foyer it is spacious and the glass ceiling means it must be bright year round while exposed brick and wooden beams keep the feeling of the old building. The space is divided into three floors of art; Modern, Romantic and the temporary exhibition.
The Spielraum is the current temporary exhibition, with an undeniably playful and bright feeling – not to mention the interactive art included in the gallery. One floor up there is more traditional Romantic paintings; the majority of which are portraits and images of the Franconian landscape, I liked the local, rural atmosphere of the art on this floor – apple orchards and overgrown paths give a different impression of Wuerzburg to the grandeur of the Residenz and the Fortress Marienburg.
The highlight for me though, personally, was the permanent exhibition of modern art on the top level. The gallery has an impressive variety of both local and international artists – including pieces by Warhol and Bridget Riley - well known names to even the least knowledgeable people (i.e. me!). The whole experience was engaging and inspiring – Kulturspeicher is definitely a place I can recommend going to spend an afternoon!
