43. Internationales Filmwochenende 26.01. – 29.01. (International Film Weekend)

@ different venues (see program)
“Have you been wanting for a long time to watch a German Western once again? Are you more interested in an Ukrainian film adoption of a novel in black and white than in the latest blockbuster? Are you carried away by an insight into the strange world of homeless artists in Romania? You can answer all these questions with ‘yes’? Some other film genres offside mainstream come into your mind? Well, then you are at the right place: The Internationale Filmwochenende Würzburg is one of the oldest and most diverse film festivals in Germany. It was founded in 1974 by a handful of volunteering enthusiasts and does not accept any thematical limits or stereotypical thinking. Würzburg thus becomes home of the world of film during the four festival days: from the French screen epic on equal footing with Hollywood productions to the South Korean horror film, from the no-budget family drama out of Germany through the US-American independent Blaxploitation film to the Armenian love ballad in black and white: Whether motion picture, documentary or children’s film – all genres have their place at this festival.” You can find this years’ program here
, or download an overview of the screening schedule here. All special events are listed here.

·       FRIDAY 27.01.

Die Päpstin: Das Ballett (Ballet)
@ Mainfrankentheater, 7.30pm
Die Päpstin (Pope Joan) is based on motives from Donna Woolfolk Cross’ historical novel of the same name. The ballet artfully portraits a historical society which is characterized by traditional conventions, roles and hierarchical structures, and cleverly draws references to our present times. The music selection includes a cross-section of spiritual works from the Baroque period up to contemporary sounds and thus reflects the tension between fictional historical history and today.
